Passionate hip-hop can’t be faked. It’s the embodiment of effort behind every word. Like a fine wine, aging can help rappers discover that unique flavour within.

For Ottawa-based rapper VNCHY, aging through his teenage years has not only helped him discover that style, it’s helped him master it. His latest single, “19+” off the upcoming Neverland EP is all about his rise to reason and understanding his place in the rap game.

VNCHY shines in between the epiphanies, using moment-in-time scenarios to link his rhymes together.

Repetitive lines like “now livin’ that dream” show VNCHY is old enough to make his own decisions and find his own direction in life. He repeats that verse in his trademark deep tone, seemingly to stress the fact that he’s now running his own show. However, VNCHY shines in between the epiphanies, using moment-in-time scenarios to link his rhymes together.

Lyrics aside, “19+” is hardcore hip-hop straight from Canada’s capital. Backed by faded-out, dreamlike mixing with thick beats provided by Prezident Jeff, VNCHY’s delivery is menacing and he lays down the lyrics with hard-hitting emphasis.

His flow is so seemingly natural and well-timed it makes one wonder how he sounds so experienced before the age of 20 – and if he’s aging this well, the future can only be a good thing for VNCHY.
