Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, better known by her stage name M.I.A., will perform a free show on May 3 at Toronto’s Tattoo Queen West as part of Canadian Music Week. On April 30, at the same venue, located on 567 Queen St. W., 200 wristbands will be given out and then 200 more CMW wristband holders will also be granted access to the event beginning May 1 as part of the CMW Concert Lottery.

The CMW Concert Lottery is a new program offering wristband holders a chance to get in on some of the larger shows during the festival.

M.I.A.’s show, originally scheduled to be at Yonge-Dundas Square, was relocated to Tattoo due to unforeseen logistical issues. The concert will also feature Swedish MC and producer Elliphant.

The show acts as a pre-CMW event, as the festival spans a five-day period from May 6 to May 10, 2014.

Emma Kombora first found her interest for writing after graduating a journalism program in which she was Entertainment Editor for a youth-led magazine called Say Word through East Metro Youth Services in Scarborough. Through the same program at East Metro and other art/music initiatives in Toronto, she got a taste of everything that goes into journalism from writing and editing to photography. She hopes through Urbanology she can take her experience and knowledge to the next level and bring a new narrative to the world of entertainment and arts.
