Students, fashion directors and bloggers fill the reception area of the Bond Place Hotel. With wine glasses in hand, attendees view sketches from the students of Fanshawe College’s fashion design class of 2014. Everyone is waiting to hear what Canadian fashion icon David Dixon has to say about a class of the country’s fresh new designers.

Dixon, who is known for his longtime women’s wear fashion line, which is sold across Canada and select boutiques around the world, has been featured in Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire just to name a few. With years of fashion industry expertise to offer, Dixon has been everything from a mentor and guest speaker to a confidante for the college program. This year he consulted with the class on the upcoming annual fashion show, Unbound – Spring 2015.

“More of the questions that come to me are reality based, outside of the school, the questions that I’ve been getting so much so far is, ‘How is it, how do I make my first step beyond the school level?’” explains the Canadian designer.

“It’s so nice to see a confirmation of our education as well as a new perspective. [Dixon] is coming in and giving us this great feedback that’s very concise and very constructive.” – Cassie Smith

And he answers many of those questions while working hands-on with the students and sharing his expertise on things like choosing fabrics for their creations.

“It’s so nice to see a confirmation of our education as well as a new perspective,” expresses third year fashion design student, Cassie Smith. “[Dixon] is coming in and giving us this great feedback that’s very concise and very constructive.”

With three months left until the annual fashion show in April, Unbound is on its way to being a fresh new start for aspiring designers with the knowledge gained and guidance from one of Canada’s fashion elite. The Spring 2015 line promises a mix of everything from sportswear to evening wears infused with colours such as orange, red and nude.
