Fans of James Brown are in for a real treat with Get On Up, which hit theatres on August 1.
The movie and music tell the story of the colourful, outspoken and talented man who won multiple Grammys and is a charter member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And Get On Up’s soundtrack is as funky and vibrant as you’d expect. Featuring some previously unreleased music, including studio and live versions of many of Brown’s top soul and funk hits from his first, 1956’s “Please Please Please” to “Out Of Sight” and “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, amongst many more.
The movie itself stars Chadwick Boseman as James Brown, who received critical acclaim as Jackie Robinson in 42, and is directed by Tate Taylor (The Help). Get On Up promises to take audiences on a journey through the life of the Godfather of Soul, from his impoverished beginnings to being one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
It remains to be seen if the movie will live up to the loftily expectations placed on it, but with a solid foundation in Brown’s music to build from, Get On Up should give fans everything they want and more.
