The HTC One M8 redefines the very definition of smartphone with a perfect combination of power and design. Before powering the phone on, its sleek look demands attention, with an all-metal frame surrounding the five-inch screen.
The appeal of the M8 gives users the impression they are holding something important, but can sometimes become slippery — dropping it is highly probable.
The phone’s Motion Launch gesture controls allow users to access different parts of the phone just by the direction they swipe in. A built-in motion sensor detects movements that allow individuals to access six different options from within their phone, including activating voice dialing or returning directly to the home screen, making the power button seem useless. While holding the phone sideways and pressing the volume button, it opens the phone’s camera, which is convenient for on the spot photos.
The phone’s camera provides an unlimited amount of options and editing tools, but ultimately falls short in the lack of detail in photos. Its duo five-megapixel camera features a dual lens that captures depth of field, allowing the focus to be edited of photos taken. The phone records in full HD 1080p and provides enough space to hold data, with 32 GBs of storage and a memory card slot that can hold up an extra 128 GB. The battery life on the phone is a non-issue with up to 20 hours of battery life on talk time.
Swiping to the right with Motion Launch or to the left from the home screen brings users into BlinkFeed, a collection of personalized data that gives the option to skip the line and receive only popular news. It’s possible to view breaking news, Twitter posts, sports scores and even create customized feeds based on Facebook likes.
The BoomSound speakers add to the already impressive sound, especially when competing with other sounds around the house. The front-facing speakers balance bass and treble levels to ensure clear vocal and sound details.
Despite its confusing name, there’s little confusion to the HTC One M8’s superiority in today’s smartphone market.
