Red carpet ready dresses, rich in bright colours. On day two of Fashion Art Toronto that is what the Baby Steinberg collection brought to the runway. Some of the standout gowns included a vibrant yellow dress with a large bowtie on the side, a mermaid style floral dress and a hot red couture dress worn by a model that favoured Lupita Nyong’o.

Inspired by Brazilian culture and her volunteer work with children in southern Brazil, Steinberg says she believes strongly in the beauty that comes from creating something out of nothing. Steinberg is frequently commissioned to create one-of-a-kind garments, not only for performance artists, actors and musicians, but also for international socialites. Her collections have been described as standout, iconic designs that make a statement and leave an impression.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION AND YOUR VISION FOR THE GOWNS. I think it’s a challenge, but I think who am I to say challenge because I have worked with garbage before and very hard material. So I thought why not? And use the same techniques that I used in the past with my recycle collection. So that was my idea and from there I started working with colours. I wanted the cotton candy, princess, kind of fairy tale look.

WHEN DID YOU START GAINING INTEREST IN FASHION DESIGN? Five years ago. This is probably my fourth FAT show and two to three years of fashion week.

I’m always going to have love for FAT, because they were my first show. I hardly even knew how to sew well, like so many designers that were there, and they supported me.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO SHOWCASE YOUR COLLECTION USING FAT AS A PLATFORM? I think that FAT is a great venue for starters. I support them because that is how I started. So I’m always going to have love for FAT, because they were my first show. I hardly even knew how to sew well, like so many designers that were there, and they supported me.

WHAT DID THAT SUPPORT MEAN TO YOU AS AN UP AND COMING DESIGNER? I think they offer you a great environment for your first show because they offered the models, the hair, the structure that you wouldn’t have if you weren’t doing FAT. It’s a great way of showcasing everything in a nice structure that’s not fashion week, which costs a lot of money.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE PURCHASE YOUR DESIGNS? At the moment they are going to have to send me an e-mail because I just moved back to Brazil in December to start a fashion school and business there.
