The Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championship is the largest international DJ competition around. In each year since 2010, the competition has searched far and wide for DJs with the crowd moving abilities and technical skills worthy of the global stage.
In this year’s National Final taking place on May 9 in Winnipeg, MB, six of Canada’s best DJs will battle each other – as well as 2014 Canadian Red Bull Thre3style Champion DJ C-Sik – for the opportunity to compete for the world title in Tokyo, Japan come September.
Calgary, AB’s own C-Sik is no stranger to the event. The 2014 Canadian Champion has been a part of the competition twice before, and he explains it quite frankly: “It’s like [a] DJ summer camp. Whatever city it’s in is usually buzzing. [As a DJ], you’re right smack in the middle of it all.”
He adds, “[Red Bull] Thre3style expands your voice. Thre3style expands your reach. It connects you with other DJs [and] business contacts.”

Vancouver, BC’s DJ Hedspin – the 2011 Red Bull Thre3style World Champion – offers similar sentiments regarding the significance of emerging victorious in such a prominent contest.
“When I won, it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me,” Hedspin says. “It definitely boosted my career a lot. I’ve [been able] to travel the world and do shows alongside my favourite DJs that I’ve looked up to.”
The event’s importance to the DJ culture here in Canada is crucial. It allows turntable specialists to showcase their proficiency on a large scale – confirming that DJing is, in fact, a craft worthy of respect.
As C-Sik puts it, it’s more than just, “being a jukebox or putting iTunes on shuffle.”
“We’re doing what we can to take these songs and present them in a way [representative of] our style. We’re not just playing the tracks – at the same time, [we’re] sprinkling [them] with technical skill. I really love how Thre3style has done that. [Thre3style] shows the general public what DJing could be. You’ve got guys like Jazzy Jeff and Skratch Bastid judging, so you know it’s legit.”

DJs put in countless hours of practice to master what they do. The Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championships makes this clear.
“It’s like a sports competition where everyone is rooting for their own guy, but in a party environment,” says Hedspin. “You always have the best competitors in each city too. It’s good for the crowd to see what real DJing actually is.”
The 2015 Canadian National Final is sure to verify DJ Hedspin’s description. With some of the finest Canadian DJs around competing for a shot at the World Championship, the event is bound to bring the best out of this nation.
As a headliner for this year’s National Final, Hedspin is excited to be part of the tremendous atmosphere once again, not just to witness the competition aspect, but also to connect with the colleagues he’s met along the way.
“I’m looking forward to seeing all the DJs, hanging out, and having a good time,” he says. “I’m looking forward to rocking the crowd and seeing what the [competitors] can bring too. I [hope to] leave the competition motivated and inspired to come up with new things.”
