Melow par Melissa Bolduc, Montreal native Melissa Bolduc’s latest collection in women’s apparel, delivers an endless use of layers, gathers and wraps. Inspired by Japanese culture, Bolduc brings the ancient art of wrapping into her comfort-conscious chic collection. Accompanied by soft colours and asymmetrical cuts, Bolduc’s Melow collection stays true to her ideal of women of all shapes and sizes being comfortable in their own skin and clothing. To make every woman wearing the line exude confidence is the designer’s main goal as she plans to take her love for culture, colour and femininity to the masses.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR COLLECTION? Japan and the Zen, and really, the way they wrap material together inspired it, and the way their technique is with dressing a body.
HOW DOES THIS COLLECTION COMPARE TO YOUR PAST COLLECTIONS? The Melow line is always really sophisticated, but comfortable and has a lot of wrap. It also has an Asian feel to it, no matter what the inspiration is. So this season was kind of a treat for me to go with Japan, because it’s my favourite inspiration.
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT MAKING THIS COLLECTION? What I liked the most was playing with each fabric and the shapes that I came up with for the skirts. For me a lot of work is with 3D; I play with the fabric, I make something, and then the way I make it, I try to make a skirt out of it and a dress out of it. So it was fun for me to play with my pattern techniques to develop this.
HOW DO YOU WANT WOMEN TO FEEL IN YOUR COLLECTION? For me the woman’s body is always my number one priority, I dress women of all sizes. I go from extra small to extra large. I do [sizes] four to 16 and I have plus-sized women coming to my store in Montreal. So we really focus on the comfort side, the adjustment, and the layers, so this is really important. It’s not the matter of adjusting your body to fit in the dress, it’s the opposite, and we adjust the dress to make it fit your curves.
