Violin acoustics faintly emerge from the left side of the Fashion Art Toronto catwalk. The violin player appears on the runway, doubling as a model as well, displaying the latest designs from Nazanin Bashi’s Nazbash line. One by one, models display the collection that features intricate detailing on an array of dresses, skirts and jackets. Adding to the musical fashion fusion is a ballet dancer, showcasing her talent in a jaw dropping calf length dress resembling a regal piece from the baroque era. After the show, Bashi has this to say about blending the worlds of music and fashion together:
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR COLLECTION? The inspiration was music and mixing music and fashion together. Before I studied fashion I studied music. I went to the conservatory and I played piano and classical music. After that I got involved with fashion and went to fashion school and the inspiration, it came from what I love and mix all the arts together. So I picked the old Persian instrument, because my culture and my background is Iranian, so I tried to pick the Persian instruments. In every piece you see the actual pieces of instrument on it. I worked the tuning parts of the instrument as a button and as a design.
HOW DOES THIS COLLECTION COMPARE TO YOUR PAST COLLECTIONS? It’s totally different, because the first collection that I had showcased at FAT last year was all about food and fashion. I’m a good cook; I love food, so it was all about colour and I had collaboration with Hasti. This year we’re both participating in the fashion show separately. She works with detail a lot and I’m more minimal, so those two mixed together was amazing. But the first collection was all about colour, texture and more exaggerating than this collection. This collection is plainer; I try to pick just one colour to keep the natural look of all the instruments. And I used real leather, wood and plain cotton.
HOW DO YOU WANT WOMEN TO FEEL IN YOUR CLOTHING? They feel feminine, confident, comfortable and sexy, in a good way.
